Kate Biberdorf is on a mission to show that chemistry is not just relevant but exciting—and, at the same time, diminish the stigma around women in the sciences. An award-winning instructor of general chemistry at The University of Texas at Austin, she has become known for her theatrical and hands-on teaching and for creating experiments that often involve impressive explosions. In her additional role as Director of Demonstrations and Outreach in the Department of Chemistry, Biberdorf has developed a series of fascinating demos that have been featured on CNN, The Discovery Channel, NBC Nightly News, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She also leads the department’s Fun with Chemistry program that targets K-12 students in Austin schools who might be intimidated by science, working to motivate their love of learning and their eventual pursuit of STEM-related degrees in college. Biberdorf is an active member of Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, an organization dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves.
