As a young girl in rural Zimbabwe, Tererai Trent could only dream about going to school. But through steadfast determination and hard work, she overcame cultural norms and her impoverished upbringing to not only earn advanced degrees in the United States, but also become one of the world’s most respected advocates for universal access to quality education. Now an adjunct professor in the School of Public Health at Drexel University, Trent has spent almost two decades consulting with major humanitarian organizations on program monitoring and policy evaluation in countries around the world. Her foundation, Tererai Trent International (TTI), is also on a mission to build and repair schools in Zimbabwe, and is funded in part by TTI businesses that help to bolster local economies as well as reduce reliance on external aid. Trent’s remarkable story, The Awakened Woman–Remembering & Reigniting Your Sacred Dreams, received the 2017 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work.
